UPDATE: Mark’s Thursday workshop in Trnava has been cancelled due to a lack of registrations.
Bratislava TIME CHANGE! We’ll start at 2pm (not 1pm).
UPDATE: Due to a lack of interest, we have had to cancel Mark’s workshop in Zilina.
It’s that time of year again. Much like the migration of birds and other animals, autumn in Slovakia means Mark Andrews is making his annual return to our neck of the woods. He’ll be making the rounds the last week of November, sharing how we can use our local surroundings as resources in our lessons.
This year, the Chamber is pleased to be working with SOL Slovakia to host Mark. Some things are the same: Mark will be returning to Nitra, Banska Bystrica, Zilina and Bratislava. Of course, Mark remains his adventurous, unplugged self so we can all expect to have a good time, learn some new teaching skills and be inspired.
A few things are different: there’s only one (afternoon) workshop in NR, ZA & BA, and Presov is a new stop this year. Banska Bystrica will still have 2 times available (morning and afternoon) for the workshop. And in Bratislava, Mark will be teaching a live lesson during the workshop time with real students, i.e. we’ll be able to observe how he uses those crazy ideas in a classroom.
The biggest change this year is that we have to charge. The reason for the fee is simply to cover costs. We’ve tried to go as low as possible and we hope that that won’t stop you from joining us. The roughly 3-hour workshop will cost Chamber members 5 EUR and non-Chamber members 10 EUR. If you’re not sure you’re a member or not, see here for more information about membership.

Think Globally, Teach Locally!
We, English teachers, do more than just teach the English language. As language teachers, every topic we explore (i.e. content) – through reading, writing, listening, speaking and even vocabulary – is an opportunity to broaden our students’ horizons. And a good starting point is for students to know their own world – their town, their culture, their lives – and learn to present it to others from other cultures.
In his workshop, Mark will be sharing a wealth of tips and activities (including role plays and working with pictures) on how to use and work with local knowledge in the classroom. All to help our students be more aware and tolerant of other cultures and peoples.
